Morgan le Fay
Frederick Sandys, 1864Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches.A red chair, a round table, and a sorceress at her loom. Picture Morgan le Fay bringing her colour to a quiet corner of your home.
Morgan le Fay by Frederick Sandys shows King Arthur's half-sister at work on a curse. She stands at her loom in a leopard skin and a green robe, a lamp burning beside her and a book of spells open at her feet. In Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, she sends Arthur a poisoned cloak. Sandys paints the moment the curse goes into the cloth. Look closely at her face. She is not hurried. She is certain. The leopard skin speaks of her wildness, and the loom of the patience it takes to plan a murder. Flame-red hair, deep greens and lamplight gold, rich colour for a pale wall.
Sandys painted her in 1864. He was one of the most skilled painters of the Pre Raphaelite circle and a close friend of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, though the two later fell out over who painted femmes fatales first. Notice the flame-red hair, a Pre Raphaelite signature, and the gold of the lamp catching her sleeve. The original hangs in Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery.
The look
Flame-red hair, deep greens and the gold of the lamp. Intense, rich and full of menace. Pre Raphaelite wall art suited to a dark academia study or library wall.
