God Speed
Edmund Blair Leighton, 1900Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. She ties her favour to his arm. He will carry it into battle, and she will wait.
Edmund Blair Leighton painted God Speed in 1900 and showed it at the Royal Academy that year. A lady in a gold brocade gown leans from a castle stair to tie a red sash, her favour, around the arm of a knight riding out to war. Behind him, banners and lances crowd the gateway.
Look closely at the stone griffin on the stair rail, a symbol of strength and courage. Leighton was famous for these moments of chivalry and romance, painted with the detail and colour of the Pre Raphaelites. Shortly before sending it to the Academy, he scraped away a week of work and repainted the change in about two hours. The painting is in a private collection, and it sold at Sotheby's in 2012 for more than 480,000 pounds.
The look
Gold brocade, crimson and chain mail against warm grey stone and pink roses. Romantic, tender and full of story. Medieval wall art for a reading room, a hallway or a bedroom, and dark romance decor at its most chivalrous.
