The Valkyrie
Peter Nicolai Arbo, 1869Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches. She rides out of the storm with her spear raised, choosing who will fall in battle.
Peter Nicolai Arbo painted The Valkyrie in 1869. In Norse mythology the valkyries were the warrior maidens of Odin. They flew over battlefields, chose the bravest of the fallen and carried them to Valhalla. Arbo shows one at full gallop on a black horse, her blue cloak and long hair streaming, her round gold shield held close.
Look closely beneath the horse. A raven flies with her, the bird of Odin, and faint riders follow through the clouds behind. Arbo was Norway's great painter of the sagas, trained in Düsseldorf, and he made a study for this figure the year before. The canvas is nearly two and a half metres tall and belongs to the Nasjonalmuseet in Oslo, a gift to the museum in 1873.
The look
Storm grey, burnished gold and deep blue, with a black horse at the centre. Wild, heroic and full of wind. Norse wall art for a study, a reading room or a hallway, and gothic home decor with a mythic edge.
