Faun by Moonlight
Léon Spilliaert, 1900Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A2, plus 12x16 and 18x24 inches.Rain on the window, a lantern on the wall, a book in bed. Picture Spilliaert's faun dancing above you under his huge pale moon.
Faun by Moonlight by Léon Spilliaert shows a faun from Greek mythology, half man and half goat, dancing in silhouette and playing his pipes. His goats rear up on their hind legs to join him. Look closely at the shadows. They stretch long across the field, and the bare trees bend behind as if they hear the music too. Picture the music: pipes in an empty field, with only the goats and the moon to hear it. Charcoal, mauve grey and moonlit ivory, quiet enough for a bedroom and strange enough to keep you looking.
Spilliaert made it in 1900, when he was just 19. He worked on paper in Indian ink wash, black chalk and coloured pencil, building soft layers of charcoal, mauve and slate green. He grew up in Ostend on the Belgian coast, admired Edgar Allan Poe and often worked through the night. He became one of the great Symbolists, artists who painted moods and dreams rather than stories. The original belongs to a private collection.
The look
Charcoal, mauve grey, slate green and moonlit ivory. Quiet, strange and atmospheric. Moody wall art for a dark academia study, a gothic bedroom or a minimal hallway.

This painting stops at A2. Above that size the original photograph loses the fine detail of the brushwork, so the shop does not offer it.
Custom sizes on request. Inch sizes have a slightly different shape from A sizes, so the edges trim a little. Size guide
