John William Waterhouse painted Circe Invidiosa, Jealous Circe, in 1892. The sorceress stands on a rock and pours a green poison into the water where Scylla bathes. In Ovid's Metamorphoses, the poison turns Scylla into the sea monster later feared by Odysseus.
Waterhouse painted Circe more than once, drawn to her power and her danger. This version was bought from the artist in 1892 and hangs in the Art Gallery of South Australia, Adelaide.
The look
Swirling emerald greens, deep blue and Circe's flowing robes. Hypnotic, vivid and full of menace. Greek mythology wall art suited to a dark academia bedroom, study or living room.
