Witches' Sabbath
Francisco de Goya, 1798Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches.A great goat stands under a crescent moon, his horns crowned with oak leaves. Bats circle overhead.
Francisco de Goya painted Witches' Sabbath in 1798 for the Duke and Duchess of Osuna's country house outside Madrid. A circle of witches brings the goat their offerings. The painting mocks superstition and the fear of witchcraft in Spain under the Inquisition.
Twenty years later, Goya returned to the theme in his Black Paintings. The original hangs in the Museo Lázaro Galdiano, Madrid.
The look
Night-sky blues, earthy ochres and pale robes in moonlight. Wild, unsettling and alive with movement. Gothic wall art suited to a goth bedroom or dark academia hallway.
