Abbott Handerson Thayer painted Stevenson Memorial in 1903, in honour of Robert Louis Stevenson, author of Treasure Island and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. A winged angel sits on a rock carved with VAEA, the mountain in Samoa where Stevenson was buried in 1894.
Thayer was famous for his angels and for his theories of camouflage in nature. His own children are hidden in the painting. The original belongs to the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
The look
