Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness
Caravaggio, 1604Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches.A dark chest of drawers, a carved chair, a Persian rug. Picture Caravaggio's brooding saint above them, lit like a candle in the dark.
Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness by Caravaggio shows the prophet who lived in the desert and baptised Jesus. Painters usually gave him a lamb and a halo. Caravaggio gave him neither, only a thin reed cross, a scarlet cloak and a face half in shadow. He sits alone, lost in thought. Look closely at the green leaves at his feet, small signs of life in the wilderness. Scarlet, deep umber and warm skin against near-black shadow.
Caravaggio painted it in 1604, for the Roman banker Ottavio Costa, who wanted it for a chapel on his estate near Genoa. This is chiaroscuro, Italian for light and dark. Caravaggio throws a strong light across the body and lets the rest fall into night. Costa liked the painting so much he kept it and sent a copy to the chapel instead. Caravaggio painted John several times, always as a young man alone in the wild. The original now hangs in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, Kansas City.
The look
Scarlet, deep umber and warm golden skin against near-black shadow. Brooding, dramatic and utterly still, as if the light comes from inside the frame itself. Baroque wall art for a dark academia study, a reading room or a hallway gallery wall.
