Lucifer
Franz von Stuck, 1890Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A2, plus 12x16 and 18x24 inches.A stone passage, a few worn steps, and two pale eyes burning out of the dark. Picture meeting Lucifer at the turn of your stair.
Lucifer by Franz von Stuck shows the light-bringer after his fall. He sits hunched in deep shadow, chin on his fist, his body almost lost in the dark. Only his eyes catch the light, pale and fixed on you. Look closely at the left edge of the canvas, where a cold blue light glints in the blackness. Lucifer means light-bringer in Latin, the name of the morning star before the fall. Smoky black and bruised blue with two points of light.
Stuck painted Lucifer in Munich in 1890. He was a leading Symbolist, a painter of moods and ideas rather than stories, and a founder of the Munich Secession. In 1891 Prince Ferdinand of Bulgaria bought the painting straight from his studio. Ferdinand later told Stuck his ministers crossed themselves when they first saw it. Stuck later built himself a grand house in Munich, the Villa Stuck, which opens to visitors as a museum today. The original hangs in the National Gallery, Sofia.
The look
Smoky black, bruised blue and cold flesh tones with two points of light. Brooding, magnetic and quietly terrifying. Gothic wall art for a dark academia study, a home library or a gothic bedroom.

This painting stops at A2. Above that size the original photograph loses the fine detail of the brushwork, so the shop does not offer it.
Custom sizes on request. Inch sizes have a slightly different shape from A sizes, so the edges trim a little. Size guide
