Festoon of Fruit and Flowers
Jan Davidsz. de Heem, 1660 to 1670Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches.A garland heavy with fruit hangs from a single ring. Look long enough and something small begins to move.
Jan Davidsz de Heem painted Festoon of Fruit and Flowers between 1660 and 1670. A swag of grapes, lemons, plums, cherries, a split pomegranate and roses hangs from a ring in front of a dark stone niche, tied with a blue ribbon. De Heem was the great master of the Dutch Golden Age still life, and he painted every surface as if you could touch it.
Look closely and the garland comes alive. Butterflies rest on the leaves, a snail creeps along a stem and beetles hide among the fruit. These small visitors carry a quiet message of vanitas, the still life tradition which reminds us that all beauty fades. The original belongs to the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, which bought it in 1809.
The look
Ripe reds, lemon yellow and soft rose against near black. Rich, moody and abundant. Still life wall art for a dining room, a kitchen with character or a dark academia study, and dark cottagecore at its most lavish.
