Anna Passini
Ludwig Passini, 1866Fine art reproduction on 200gsm matte paper. A5 to A1, plus 12x16, 18x24 and 24x36 inches.A young wife sits on a Venetian balcony, high above the canal, in the sunlight of 1866.
Ludwig Passini painted his wife Anna in 1866, seated on a Gothic balcony of the Palazzo Priuli in Venice. Passini was an Austrian painter who made Venice his home and became famous for watercolours of its people and palaces. Here the city is all warm brick, carved stone and a green canal below.
Look closely at the balcony. Anna sits in a white dress at the iron railing, small against the great terracotta wall, while the roofs and a dome of the city rise behind her. The scale is the point. Passini gives us Venice in full, and then one quiet person within it. The couple married in 1864. Anna died about a year and a half later, which makes this sunny watercolour a tender memorial.
The look
Terracotta brick, sky blue and the white of her dress against a jade canal. Sunny, detailed and romantic. Venice wall art for a hallway, a reading room or a sunlit study, with an old money elegance.
